As Jesus declared, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30) and “Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’ ?” (John 14:9). Even though, out of humility, Our Lord spoke of Himself as the “Son of Man”, His followers (see Simon Peter, Matthew 16:16) and even enemies (sarcastically, in the case of Caiaphas Mark 14:61) referred to Him as the “Son of God” (see also Psalm 2:7). “That the Father, not the Son, had revealed Christ’s identity as the Son of God shows how profound was the significance of Peter’s words even if Peter himself had not yet fully sounded their depth. By this revelation the Father had singled out Peter as the natural foundation for His Son’s society and Our Lord, as ever, follows His Father’s lead.
